Recently as I was doing my morning devotions, I came across a verse that has transfixed to the very core of my heart ever since my eyes laid theirs gazes upon it. The words hit me like a car with its headlights on full glow does to a doe. I knew what the passage was relaying, but I had to repeatedly read it in order to really understand and fully make the verse my own.
The verse goes as following: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal"- 2 Corinthians 4:18. As I finished reading this passage, and even as I steadfastly smash against the keyboard on my Mac, a feeling of calm and peace resonates throughout me. I wish to share with you what blessing I have received from just these few words. Imagine then, what blessing God has in store for us if we read two verses. Maybe a whole chapter. A whole book? The entire Bible?
To fix our eyes on what is seen is a mere child's play. All we need is to position our head towards a certain position, lay our eyes upon a certain object, and the lense, cornea, retina, etc will do the rest to refocus the image and relay it to our brain. But to see what is unseen, no amount of staring or gazing will suffice. To see what is unseen is not to see with our worldly eyes. To see what is unseen is to see through our faith, through our "other" eye that which does not belong to this world, but to Lord Jesus Christ. This is a much harder task, but the joys of the fruit that come with the work is all the more exponentially greater. To fix our eyes on what is unseen does not mean we should discard all that is on Earth. I think it means that we see, accept, and appreciate all that God has placed on this world for our eyes to see and our minds to enjoy. However, He still wants us to fix our gaze upon him and on things in store for us in the future and once we join our Father. This is what it means to fix our eyes not on what is seen; it means that we may see what's on this Earth, but we do not fix our gaze upon it. Fixing our gaze upon something means that usually there's certain qualities of that which we are seeing that makes us want to continue to look at. We do not indulge ourselves to the world. We may see and appreciate what God has place upon this land, but we do not wish to let those superficial objects to capture our minds and distract us from God. To fix our eyes on what is unseen is this: We not only see God and the unique plan for which He has laid out for all of us since the beginning of time, but we also believe and focus on Him. We see that there is something far greater, something more celestial, than what has been offered to us by God here on Earth. God wishes us to see Him. He wishes us to see his love and guidance that which He provides for all of us. And that, my friends, is far greater and worthier to look and fix upon than all that this world has to offer.
For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal: Let us take this computer on which I am writing this blog. How much longer would it last? 2 years? 3 years? Maybe even 4 if I am extra careful with it? But in the end, it will be discarded, recycled, and even those recycled components of the computer will soon decay and disintegrate forever. All that is on this Earth, whether it be water, food, electronics, will eventually come to pass. But God, He never decays. He never forsakes. He never leaves. He never abandons. So why then, should we fix our eyes on what is seen, which will eventually leave our sight, when we can set our eyes upon what is unseen, that which is eternal and everlasting?
These are just a few words that which I leave with you to read or not to read. I only wish that the verse which I have shared with you today, will bless all who read it as much, if not more than it has me. God bless each and everyone! May you be encouraged by God's word today! Always fix your gaze upon Him, and He will never forsake you. Amen
